TRY THE TWO-QUESTIONFind musicians to collaborate with - it sounds easy, but it can be a long and difficult task. When you start a band or join a band, you will be forgiven for thinking that it’s almost impossible to find musicians with the right attitude, the right ability, the right gear, the right age, the right availability in the right genre - all in the right place!
Sourcing musicians for your studio recording can be just as difficult. To achieve a pro recording you have to make a band work - you need the right band mix. Countless sessions have not achieved their full potential simply because members of the band wanted different things - musicians wanted their own vision fulfilled.
Of course, when you’re looking for a band it’s hard enough to find a band, but bands looking for you are having the same problems!

The Brum Beat sound of the 60’s went on to dominate the charts well into the 70’s. Bands like The Spencer Davis Group, The Idle Race, The Moody Blues and The Move all coming from the ‘Second City’. Often cited as the birthplace of heavy metal the industrial history of the area leant itself perfectly to the genre of music that gave us Black Sabbath, Judas Priest.
The 70’s proved to be a very productive time for the area with The Move morphing into The Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard. Birmingham’s multi cultural influence came to the fore with the introduction of Reggae and Ska.
Into the 80’s Birmingham, again, was at the forefront of the ‘New Romantic’ movement with major bands emerging like Duran Duran and Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Later that decade saw Musical Youth, UB40, Pato Benton and The Beat.
The Charlatans, Pop will eat itself and Ocean Colour Scene also emerged all finding chart success and all from Birmingham and surrounding areas.
Birmingham was also leading the way in the 90’s with electronic music, garage and Hip Hop artists emerging like Bentley Rhythm Aces, Electribe 101 and The Streets.
Birmingham also has a thriving Jazz scene with many pubs and clubs hosting regular jazz nights. Andy Hamilton and King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys and Soweto Kinch all closely associated with the City.
Classical music is also well featured in the City. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are internationally renowned. The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group are internationally respected chamber orchestra specialising in modern music.
Birmingham is famous for being the City where the Mellotron was invented; this had a major affect on rock music and created a trademark sound for many of this countries Progressive Rock bands.
